Hello brother. Good piece. I think that the truth of these issues is multi-faceted. I think that there are a couple of reasons behind this. These are just being put out there, as I have honestly not considered them in enough detail to put them in any kind of order. They are as follows:
Jesus loved Lazarus as a close friend, and was emotionally sad about his death.
Jesus was sad that anybody, his friend or anyone else, had to suffer for what was right. I'm not getting into a lovey-dovey notion of God being all "Love, Love, Love" here, but just saying that God is Just, Loving, and everything else. He is not capricious in any way, so He does not enjoy the pain of those, even when it is best in the end for them and others.
Jesus was nearing the time of His crucifixion which upset Him, as we saw in the garden. This act would be one of the important ones on the road to this event of sacrifice for all of us.
Jesus was calling Lazarus away from Heaven to this sad, pathetic, evil world. He wept for the situation of Lazarus coming back here.

Those are my opinions, for what they are worth. I look forward to reading more of your own ideas. God bless. :)

Thanks, Stephen. I don't know why people think Jesus wept over Lazarus. After all, He was just minutes away from raising him from the dead. I had always thought He was weeping out of empathy for Mary and Martha since He knew that they had been grieving for several days. He seems to have been close to that particular family and clearly loved them very much. But I know that Adam has another idea about why Jesus wept, and it makes even more sense. I am curious to see what you have to say.
